Some celebrate it to mark the arrival of king Ram to his kingdom Ayodhya after being in a state of banishment for 14 years; it also symbolizes the success of morality over evil as king Ram defeated Ravana, an evil demon king while some celebrated it to mark the success of Lord Krishna and Goddess Durga over the demon Narakasura and Mahishasura respectively.
Diwali is also the day when Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vaman killed king Bali who was a demon, for greater good.
